Need help generating a Excel Macro for categorizing a list of ID's in a different row?

I have a column of ID's in which I need to ign numbers to in a different column. For instance, the first ID needs to igned the number 1 in the different column and go in ascending order from there, also if the ID's are identical, they need to be igned the same number in the different column.
