Great Gatsby: Would you help me answer a question about the book?

Well they had a stroke of bad luck when they had to move off their farm. I read the book ages ago and don't remember the events but I believe that their negative attitude was a result of their unfortunate cirstances. Their struggle for survival was so hard, that they really felt like it was an endless vicious cycle.
