Someone please tell me the purpose of hydrochloric acid during reduction of benzophenone to diphenylmethanol?

When reducing benzophenone to diphenylmethanol using NaBH4 (sodium borohydride), what's the purpose of using hydrochloric acid in the procedure?? This is not doing my homework for me by the way, this is to help me understand the reaction a little bit more.
