Why was water in europe so filthy?

Its the same reason some third world countries water is still undrinkable today. First of all people bathed in it, so you had whatever filth had aculated on them floating around. Secondly they didn't care about polluting and would dump crap into the water. Since beer was heated during brewing it killed off most of the germs. People also boiled water to make it drinkable.
