With the advent of advance technology is "smaller government" just an illusion?

Once the economic factors in this country balance themselves out, it should be a natural act to cut spending to make government smaller. Our governmental levels don't have the revenue now as it is to keep up with social needs and demands. Most civil servants now have to take furloughs without pay as cost cutting procedures. Goods and services need to be sliced once employment improves and as a result revenues increase. We do have a need to balance budgets, across the board.
